A Brief History of UUSCM at UUA General Assembly
Each year, UUSCM has a significant presence at the UUA's General Assembly. Prior to COVID, UUSCM Board members attended in person and staffed a booth in the exhibit hall, where we networked, shared information about our programs and member benefits, and displayed materials from UUSCM members in attendance. UUSCM sponsored and organized program items, and hosted multiple in-person networking/social events, including a "Pub Night" in a local venue with complimentary appetizers, and a casual lunchtime meeting where everyone was invited to bring their own lunches and enjoy a chat with the Board.
When GA went online because of COVID, UUSCM pivoted right along with it. In 2020 and 2021 we hosted as many as a dozen online networking events in our Zoom room during "virtual" GA--open to UUSCM members who could not attend GA as well as all GA attendees--and created recorded workshops and panels. When GA 2022 became "multi-platform," so did UUSCM. We held dual networking events that met both on Zoom and in person at the convention center in Portland.
As General Assembly evolves to become more inclusive and reach UUs both remotely and in person, UUSCM will also be extending its reach--beyond the walls of our congregations and the "walls" of in-person GA!
In a world filled with division and challenges, the theme for this year's General Assembly is a powerful reminder of the core principles that unite us as Unitarian Universalists. "Love Unites, Stories Ignite" celebrates the profound impact of love as a binding force that transcends boundaries and fosters connections within our faith community and beyond.
Our faith has always been rooted in the power of storytelling, and this year we'll explore how our stories can ignite change, inspire compassion, and help us build a more just and equitable world. Through storytelling, we share our experiences, our dreams, our struggles, and our triumphs. It is through these stories that we can find common ground, deepening our understanding of one another and the world around us.
The 63rd General Assembly will take place virtually Thursday, June 20 through Sunday, June 23, 2024.
